West Midlands Attractions

The Midlands, formerly, and very loosely, the medieval Kingdom of Mercia, was important during the Industrial Revolution.  The area containing the cities of Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Coventry, Leicester, Nottingham and Stoke on Trent to name a few is served by a network of roads and railway lines to ease travel for visitors.

The counties making up the Midlands have a varied history, from the importance of Nottingham during the English Civil War to the Black Country’s importance during the Industrial Revolution and even the birthplace of Sir William Shakespeare in Stratford Upon Avon.  There is so much history in the region that it draws many tourists every year.  How about a visit to Warwick Castle or Nottingham Castle and take in the beautiful  Sherwood Forest, home of Robin Hood, for a peek into the history of the region.

Many of the towns and cities in the region offer guided bus tours and river cruises, you can even take a canal cruise through the City of Birmingham. And of course walking tours in the area abound to take in the beautiful scenery.

The most famous attractions in the area are undoubtedly the theme parks of Drayton Manor and Alton Towers.  For those looking for an adrenaline rush how about trying the challenges of the Bear Grylls Adventure or, opening in June 2019, discover the history of the famous Silverstone Race Track at the Silverstone Experience.

Other top attractions are the creatures at the Birmingham Sea Life Centre, West Midlands Safari Park and Trentham’s Monkey Forest. Why not visit the town of Bourneville and visit Cadbury World, discovering the history of this popular sweet treat. Alternatively the children will love the hands on approach at Legoland Discovery Centre..

As the Midlands is such a large area there are many tours in and around the area, from visits to Stratford Upon Avon to visit to Snowdonia and everything in between.  From Birmingham how about a trip to the Warner Bros Studios in London to find out about the making of the Harry Potter movies?
